Ukraine war: Battle of Bakhem intensifies, claims heavy losses on both sides

Both Ukraine and Russia have claimed that they have inflicted heavy losses on the opposing side in the battle for the eastern city of Bakhtam.

Russian forces have been trying to capture this important city for the past several months.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky says that more than 1100 Russian soldiers have been killed in the last few days, while many more soldiers have been seriously injured.

On the other hand, Russia says that during the last 24 hours, Russian forces have killed more than 220 Ukrainian soldiers.

The BBC was unable to confirm the figures given by the two countries.

Analysts say that the city of Bakkhmat is not of much military importance, but the city has become the center of attention of Russian military commanders who have been trying hard to deliver good news to Moscow for the past few months.

According to analysts, if Russia succeeds in capturing the city, it will move a little closer to its goal of capturing the entire Donetsk region. It should be noted that Donetsk is one of four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine that Russia annexed after a referendum last September. In this controversial referendum, Russia faced severe criticism from other countries.

The Ukrainian commanders defending Bakhtam are given many resources to prevent a Russian attack. According to these commanders, their strategy is to keep Russian troops trapped in the area so that Russia cannot attack other parts of Ukraine in the coming months.

In a video address on Sunday night, the Ukrainian president said that in less than a week after March 6, we have managed to kill more than 1100 Russian soldiers in the Bakkhmat sector alone. Only at this point, we have caused irreparable damage to Russia.

Mr. Zelinsky further said that 1,500 Russian soldiers have been so seriously injured that they will no longer be able to participate in any military operations.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense of Russia said that Russian forces have killed more than 220 Ukrainian soldiers.

The commander of Ukraine's armed forces, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that Russia's "gang of mercenaries, the Wagner group, was attacking his troops from all sides to break through all obstacles and reach the center of the city of Bakhtam." could

The Wagner group is the Russian paramilitary organization that is playing a central role in the attack on Bakhmat. Yevgeny Pargozin, the commander of this non-governmental group, has also staked his reputation in the attempt to capture the city.

On Sunday, he said the situation in Bakhem is "difficult, very difficult, (because) the enemy is fighting to save every meter (of the city). And the closer we get to the city, the more intense the fighting gets.

Earlier on Saturday, the Study of War, an American think tank, said that the invasion of Moscow had been stopped.

"It's more likely that the Wagner Group will be stuck in urban areas, so it's going to be difficult for it to make any major advances."

About 70,000 people lived in the city before the Russian troops entered the Bakhmet region, but only a few thousand of them remain here. The city was once famous for its salt and gypsum mines and winemaking industry.

Ukraine, like Russia, attaches great importance to Bakhtam politically, and President Zelensky has always described the city as a symbol of resistance.

When he went to Washington last December, he described the region as the "fortress of the spirit" of Ukraine and presented the Bakkhmat flag to the US Congress.

Western officials estimate that 20,000 to 30,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in Bakhmat and its surrounding areas so far.
