Why did Akshay take Canadian citizenship?

Akshay Kumar said during the 'Hindustan Times Leadership Summit' that he never thought that he would need a document to prove his Indianness.


Regarding this, he added, 'After the consecutive failures of 14 films, I thought I should try something else. A close friend of mine living in Canada invited me to come there. He said that we will work on something together.


'They are also Indian and live there. I got my passport there because I thought my career here was over. But then my 15th film became a hit and I never looked back after that. I kept moving but I never felt that I should change my passport.


But after a dispute over citizenship, he decided to apply for an Indian passport.


Akshay said at the same event: 'I have applied for it (citizenship) because I think people have made it an issue that I have to show my passport to prove my Indianness. This bothers me and I don't want to give anyone a chance. That is why I have applied for an Indian passport.


He further said that 'My wife is an Indian citizen and my son is also an Indian. Everyone in my family is Indian. I pay my taxes here. My life is here but some people want to prove something else.
