Most people in Pakistan compare their grocery bills with last year and wonder why they have to buy the same quantity of items at such a high price.

Inflation in the country reached 36.4 percent in April, which is predicted to be higher than Sri Lanka in default and economic crisis in 2022.

Food inflation, i.e. the increase in prices of food items, is currently recorded at 48% in Pakistan. In this situation after the increase in prices, the rich working class has also had to make some changes in their living standards.

For example, a 20 kg bag of flour in the country, which was Rs 967 in May 2022, now costs Rs 2683 after a 177% increase in price.

The BBC has used the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) to examine the prices of bargain and everyday items to see how inflation has affected your grocery basket.

Procedure

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) is calculated every week to assess changes in the prices of essential commodities in the short term, which gives an idea of the price of goods in the country. The base year of SPI calculation is 2015-16.

The current calculation compares the SPI of May 5, 2023, and May 4, 2022, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

When the user selects the items, the calculator compares their prices and displays the results.

When no item is selected in the grocery basket, default items: Onion (1kg), Potato (1kg), Beef (1g), Mutton (1kg), Tea (190g), and Tins of Dalda Oil are displayed. are done.
